Study affirms bracing is effective treatment for Idiopathic Scoliosis
The New England Journal of Medicine published the results of the multicenter “Bracing in Adolescent Idiopathic Scoliosis Trial” (BrAiST). The complete study is available at:Effects of Bracing in Adolescents with Idiopathic Scoliosis. Dr. Stuart Weinstein concluded that bracing significantly decreased the progression of high-risk curves below the threshold for surgery in patients with adolescent idiopathic scoliosis.
The benefit increased with longer hours of brace wear. This and other studies presented at the recent Scoliosis Research Society (SRS) meeting show a strong relationship between bracing success and dose; meaning, the more you wear the brace the greater the chances of success.
Dose monitors, small thermal sensors that record the internal temperature of the brace, are now available from Boston Brace. (iButton) These monitors provide valuable information that will help patients see their actual wear time and patterns. By discussing this openly, studies show patient’s compliance improves.
