Scoliosis Information for Parents & Patients

The Boston Brace system for treating idiopathic scoliosis was developed in the early 1970s at Children’s Hospital in Boston by Dr. John Hall and Bill Miller, CPO, the founder of Boston Brace.  The goal remains today as it was over 30 years ago to prevent curve progression and maintain a stable spine in adulthood.  Boston Brace has been committed to training professionals all over the world for over thirty years on how to utilize the Boston Brace system.  The Boston Brace course, where we certify clinicians, has become the bench mark for orthotists in learning not only about our system, but idiopathic scoliosis and the importance of the team approach to treatment.

The Boston Brace system is a logical, multidisciplinary approach to the treatment of idiopathic scoliosis.  The Brace itself is only one component of the system.  To achieve the most success with the system, we highly recommend that a team approach be undertaken including development of a treatment plan with the involvement of the patient, his or her family, orthopedist, orthotist, physical therapist and nurse.  Each participant plays a key roll in achieving success with the brace .

Our Company both manufactures the Boston Brace and operates clinics under the name of NOPCO (National Orthotics and Prosthetics Company www.nopcoclinics.com ).  We operate nine clinics including locations within Children’s Hospital in Boston, Children’s Hospital in Philadelphia and Mountainside Specialized Children’s Hospital in New Jersey.  Our practitioners treat close to 1,000 patients per year for scoliosis.  Our Manufacturing operation makes over 5,000 Boston Braces per year for patients.  Our technicians average in excess of twelve years experience in reviewing x rays of the spine and fabricating scoliosis braces.  All have attended the Boston Brace course as well.

We encourage our patients and families to make an informed decision regarding their treatment, to ask the tough questions and to make sure they feel confident with the competence of their practitioner.  It is important to ask your practitioner how many patients they see each year for scoliosis, if they have attended the Boston Brace course, and if the brace will be fabricated by Boston Brace. (If it is, it will have “Original Boston Brace” stamped on the front of the brace)

Please do not hesitate to contact us with any additional questions you may have including referrals to competent practitioners in your area.  We realize the treatment you choose for your child is a very important decision.  Our philosophy at Boston Brace is to make sure we treat every patient as if they were one of our own children.  We can be reached via email at customerservice@bostonbrace.com.  Our phone number is 800-262-2235.
